{"id":4494,"date":"2024-10-21T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T06:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stemmarine.it\/?p=4494"},"modified":"2025-02-13T11:53:16","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T10:53:16","slug":"stem-50-designer-nicolas-purnu-explains-the-boats-concept","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stemmarine.it\/en\/stem-50-designer-nicolas-purnu-explains-the-boats-concept\/","title":{"rendered":"Stem 50: designer Nicolas Purnu explains the boat&#8217;s concept"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><br><br>For the design of the Stem 50, the new aluminium sailing cabin cruiser that Stem Marine has decided to launch on the market, the Parma-based company turned to a highly experienced naval architect such as Nicolas Purnu who, in this interview, explains the concept, the many technical solutions and the boat&#8217;s target.<br><\/strong><br>After more than 30 years of experience in the rescue and emergency boat sector, <strong>in 2024<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stemmarine.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stem Marine<\/a> opened a new division dedicated to pleasure sailing yachts. <\/strong>Inaugurating the line is the <a href=\"https:\/\/stem50.stemmarine.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stem 50<\/a>. A <strong>15,24 metre<\/strong> cabin cruiser dedicated to <strong>blue water and fast cruising<\/strong> <strong> <\/strong>that condenses an avant-garde look, high-tech solutions and in which the company pours all its know-how on <strong>aluminium craftsmanship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design of the Stem 50 is by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/3lignes.fr\/index.php\/a-propos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French naval architect Nicolas Purnu<\/a><\/strong> who trained in the prestigious <strong>Marc Lombard<\/strong> studio, with which he still collaborates. In his work on the design of the boat, Purnu tried to interpret as best he could the requests decided upon and personally followed by Michele Corradi, Managing Director of Stem Marine. Some points were already very well defined (material, watertight bulkheads, position of the chart table). I was given plenty of room to develop the boat around 2 main ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>General simplicity <\/strong>of operation and construction;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Particular attention to <strong>safety<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About the general simplicity of construction, I opted for a <strong>fairly classic structure<\/strong> and a <strong>hull with hard chines<\/strong>. We&#8217;ve also milled some of the parts, which simplifies the construction, while improving precision and weight. In terms of simplicity of operation, I&#8217;ve slightly increased the dimensions imagined in the first proposal in order to maintain <strong>good accessibility to the systems <\/strong>(helm, engine, water, etc.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of safety, the<strong> three watertight bulkheads<\/strong> were requested in the first specifications, which suited my own vision of the project very well. We also developed a<strong> highly protected cockpit <\/strong>and chose to maintain a high level of stability. The design involved a lot of discussion: it&#8217;s important for everyone (architect and shipyard) to see the boat as it will be built. I had a lot of latitude on several subjects, while on others it was the shipyard&#8217;s initial choices that prevailed. The discussion has been particularly fruitful and, although each of us has sometimes had to give up on an idea. <strong>The result is very coherent and well thought out. <\/strong>For example, a lifting keel was originally requested by the yard, but we agreed that this type of system, although easily realised in alumium, ultimately offered few advantages compared to the constraints it imposed\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who do you think is the \u2018typical sailor\u2019 interested in such a boat and what exactly are they looking for?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Stem 50 is aimed at<strong> sailors who want to be able to go far and long with a large autonomy<\/strong>. They are looking for a boat in which they can have confidence. It&#8217;s a <strong>material<\/strong> I&#8217;m familiar with and one <strong>that has a number of advantages <\/strong>when cruising, not least its <strong>ductility<\/strong>. However, it does have a major influence on the design, much more so than composite, for example. I can see 2 main points that have an impact on design:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the outside, the way the material is used, which influences shape and style;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the inside, the structure of the planking has an impact on the volume available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of sheet metal means that we prefer to generate shapes that can be developed, whether for the hull or the deck. In terms of style, for example, I&#8217;ve opted for <strong>very simple shapes<\/strong>, playing on the angles rather than the curves of the surfaces. The result is a \u2018solid\u2019 design that works well with the programme and is very much in tune with the times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, <strong>we haven&#8217;t given up on the design<\/strong>, accepting to make things a little more complicated where it&#8217;s worthwhile. So, because the shipyard wanted the boat to fit in with the aesthetic codes of the time, we made this large curved stop along the entire length of the planking to liven up the overall line, like some Imocas or multihulls. Inside, the ribs take up a certain amount of space, which has to be taken into account at the design stage to avoid any loss of habitability. With my experience of this material, that&#8217;s not a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What aspects of the hull have you focused on and what do you see as its strengths?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to have a load capacity of <strong>around<\/strong> <strong>2 tons<\/strong>. Not that you always carry that much weight, but these blue-water cruisers often put on a bit of weight over time (adding equipment, etc.). How do you express this in terms of design?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s already quite stable and not \u2018deceptive\u2019 (the stability curve is quite progressive). On deck there are the crew protection features (dog house, secure cockpit aft etc.). Inside, of course, there are the watertight bulkheads, which are useful in the event of a collision, but also the panoramic view from inside the boat, so you can keep an eye on things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marine accidents, such as the recent sinking of the Bayesian, have drawn attention to the need for watertight bulkheads, even on pleasure craft. How did you work on the Stem 50 in this respect?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve created compartments in order to <strong>isolate potential water entry points  <\/strong>(rudder, thruster, anchor locker). We&#8217;ve also <strong>doubled certain bilge<\/strong> <strong>pumps<\/strong> because of the large longitudinal structure. That&#8217;s already a lot compared with other mass-produced boats. We could imagine creating other watertight bulkheads, particularly in the forward and aft cabins, to increase the number of compartments. That would only be at the cost of a significant loss of user-friendliness on board. In my opinion, it&#8217;s not necessary, except when sailing in really hostile areas. I don&#8217;t have enough information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2024\/aug\/24\/sicily-yacht-sinking-updates-mike-lynch-bayesian-italy-news-updates#:~:text=The%20Bayesian%20is%20believed%20to,a%20storm%2C%20officials%20have%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bayesian<\/strong><\/a> to have a definite opinion. Although I do believe that a waterspout generates so much energy that there&#8217;s unfortunately little you can do when it hits. How did you approach the question of ease of navigation?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMainly in the <strong>ergonomics of the cockpit<\/strong>, where we&#8217;ve \u2018sectorised\u2019 the hartware. Quite conventionally, the piano is on both side of the companionway and all the halyards and reef lines come back to it. This classical arrangement means that the crew member in charge of reefing the mainsail is well protected and can work with 2 winches, without getting in the way of the helmsman but still being able to communicate easily with him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the helm station, we&#8217;ve installed 4 winches that group the sheets together on 2 primary electric winches, while the traveller controls, furling lines and backstays are sent to 2 winches further back in the cockpit. <strong>The helmsman can therefore adjust all the sails on his own, and quickly switch to staysail if the wind picks up. <\/strong>This general layout also offers <strong>real flexibility<\/strong>, and it is possible to determine with the purchasers any other distribution of ropes according to their wishes or habits\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><br><br>On blue water yachts like the Stem 50, the demands for comfort are even higher. How has your work in this area evolved?<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first comfort is <strong>to have confidence in your boat<\/strong> and in my opinion the Stem 50 is very comfortable! There&#8217;s plenty of equipment available, of course, but it&#8217;s in the details that comfort really comes into its own: the view outside, natural light and ventilation at anchor, the general space that allows everyone to get away from it all if they want to. It&#8217;s important not to lose sight of the fact that you&#8217;re at anchor for a large part of a cruise, and the deck has also been developed with this in mind. Why do you think they are so successful?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think these blue-water cruisers have always been discreetly present on the market, but offered by small shipyards and targeting customers who exactly know what they want. As a result, the configurations of some of the boats on offer have been a little more conservative than those of mass-produced boats, and although this is now the case, some innovations have taken longer to be incorporated. Can you tell us why you think he represents global excellence in nautical design? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI actually started my career with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.giornaledellavela.com\/2023\/09\/20\/farewell-to-marc-lombard-designer-innovator-from-open-racing-to-cruising-boats\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marc Lombard<\/a><\/strong> 20 years ago, at a time when the company&#8217;s business was expanding rapidly. I was involved in preliminary design and the design of production multihulls, one-offs and several aluminium sailing boats. <strong>The great strength of this human-sized company is its global vision of projects, because it includes<br>architects and engineers who are always curious. <\/strong>In this way, every aspect of the design (structure, performance, aesthetics, stability, etc.) is dealt with in-house, with lots of interaction between people, and it&#8217;s particularly rewarding and motivating to learn from others in this way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s also a <strong>real desire to innovate<\/strong> when carrying out projects. A lot of questions are asked with each new project, even if the answers may seem obvious at first. Marc Lombard passed away a year ago, but the company he created continues, I believe, to perpetuate this spirit. For my part, I had to leave in 2018 and set up on my own.<strong> It was Marc, with whom I kept in occasional contact, who suggested I work on the Stem50 when he was too busy to respond to this project: I hope he would have liked this boat. <\/strong>In any case he would probably have made his opinion clear to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What you personally learnt from him?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a personal level, I gained experience from this period in areas that I had dealt with less than others in my initial architecture studies.It has also given me a critical and uncompromising view of my own work&#8230; which is not very comfortable when you&#8217;re working alone.
